The international community is holding its breath following the massive drone and missile attack launched on Israel by Tehran overnight from Saturday to yesterday, because if the worst has been avoided for the moment, no one can predict the future.
“An attack of 300 missiles and drones is huge. Even if the material damage was limited, it is a provocation on a very large scale,” indicated Thomas Juneau, assistant professor at the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Ottawa.
Iranian armed forces launched a swarm of drones, ballistic missiles and cruise missiles towards Israel for five hours. The Israeli army, however, estimated that it had intercepted “99% of the shots” in its direction with the help of the United States and other allies.
Only a few missiles lightly hit a military base and no urban centers were targeted by Iranian attacks. A seven-year-old girl was also injured.

The attack was a response to the April 1 strike that destroyed the Iranian consulate in Damascus and killed two senior Revolutionary Guard officers. Tehran attributed this strike to Israel, which neither confirmed nor denied.
“The Iranians felt directly targeted and humiliated,” explained political scientist Sami Aoun, professor emeritus at the University of Sherbrooke.
Support for Israel
Since the attack, the West has displayed complete support for Israel, which has become “not the oppressor who ravages Gaza and kills hysterically, but rather the victim of an obscurantist, Islamist, dictatorial power like Iran.” , described Sami Aoun.
“Iran has taken another step towards destabilizing the region and risks provoking an uncontrollable regional escalation. This scenario must be avoided,” indicated yesterday the members of the G7, of which Canada is a member.
“These attacks once once more demonstrate the Iranian regime’s contempt for peace and stability in the region,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau previously declared.
Possible replica
United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged “all parties to exercise maximum restraint to avoid any action that might lead to major military confrontations.”
Iranian President Ebrahim Raïssi warned Israel that any “reckless” response to the attack would result in a much stronger military response.

“Joe Biden asked Benjamin Netanyahu not to respond on a large scale. The question is what Israel will do. […] The risk that it will regionalize into total war is very worrying,” indicated Thomas Juneau, specialist in the Middle East.
Tehran had always been careful not to attack Israel head-on. He preferred to support the actions carried out by loyal organizations, notably the Lebanese Hezbollah, since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas.
“The Iranians, who did not react following thousands of deaths in Gaza, will continue not to do so,” believes Sami Aoun.
