Stasi murder of 1974: Three witnesses remember 2024-04-14 23:57:17

DFor many ninth or tenth graders, the trip to Berlin is a highlight of their school days. You walk through the Brandenburg Gate, marvel at the hustle and bustle on the streets and the sprawling subway and S-Bahn network – and then you are convinced that one day you would like to live here at least for a while. Or, on the contrary, for nothing in this world.

Jörg Thomann

Editor in the “Life” department of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung.

It was no different 50 years ago. That’s how long it’s been since class 10d of the Bad Hersfeld secondary school set off for the big city, which was still divided at the time. The 35 young people spent a few days in West Berlin and on a Friday they visited the eastern part. It was that day, March 29, 1974, that would make the Bad Hersfeld students’ trip to Berlin unforgettable. One can assume that at least three of them – Hanna, Petra and Martina – would have given anything to be able to forget the events of that day.
