Mitsotakis – Tusk meeting: We must protect our borders – 2024-04-14 23:39:32

The joint statements of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and his Polish counterpart Donald Tusk are in progress.

Earlier the two leaders had a private meeting.

This is the first visit of a Greek prime minister to Poland since 2011 and during the meeting of the two leaders, all issues of European interest are expected to be discussed, in view of the extraordinary European Council next week.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I have very important political and personal reasons every time I visit Poland. My wife is originally from Poland.
We are in the 3rd year of the illegal attack on Ukraine, the impact is evident in Poland. We will continue our strong support to Ukraine financially and militarily for as long as necessary.

For illegal immigration we may be in different parts of the continent, our borders are not only of our countries but of the EU. We know the importance of our borders. We must decide who enters our borders, not the traffickers.

Defense and security must be high on the priorities.

For the European elections we are from the same political family and we should have an important role in Europe’s initiatives whether for defense-security, the agricultural sector, a green transition that should be done at a pace that will not be destructive for our farmers.
We are grateful for the Polish firefighters who were there and supported us. We are considering a mechanism to have a division of Polish firefighters in Greece for a few weeks or even months.
I appeal to the Poles to choose Greece for their holidays.

Answer to a question regarding sanctions in Russia

According to iefimerida, the EU has been particularly united in supporting Ukraine which Russia did not expect.

Sanctions should be monitored and investigated if there are countries that violate and support Russia.

We will ensure that everything we do is legally secure.

For the defense of Europe

We have talked a lot regarding the future of Europe’s defence. We need to explore new avenues for cooperation at European level to tackle common risks.

Joint borrowing for a European Security Fund.

We have common challenges like missile defense, if we use the Fund we will need flagship programs that prove they provide security to

European citizens. The facts have changed, the new challenges in security matters should come to the fore.
