ETECSA reports on the slow Internet connection in Cuba 2024-04-14 17:36:47

It is already common for the Cuban Telecommunications Company SA (ETECSA) to face constant complaints from its users and the slow Internet connection is one of the main problems.

Excuses are also common, since this connection problem that affects the entire island regardless of the time, has a culprit for them, the annoying blackouts. Why does the internet go down or get slowed down with power outages on the island?

When the electricity supply is interrupted, many Cubans lose access to the landline, WhatsApp, Facebook and the Internet in general. This is because the equipment in the telecommunications system runs on electrical energy. As there are not enough backup sources, interruptions and impacts are inevitable, ETECSA states.

In December 2023, a few months ago, in Sancti Spíritus, the capital of Sancti Spíritus, complaints regarding the poor quality of internet and telephone services intensified. Given this situation, Gustavo López Cruz, head of the Commercial Department of ETECSA in the province, recognized the responsibility of the blackouts in affecting telecommunications services.

However, the problem of ETECSA’s slow Internet connection is not only in Sancti Spíritus, but in the entire country and the company has not presented short-term solutions for this problem.

Slow Internet connection of ETECSA in Cuba

The excuse for the slow Internet connection in Cuba, according to ETECSA, is because the equipment that provides the telecommunications service, such as telephone exchanges and radio bases, has a power backup system. This system can be made up of batteries or generator sets. However, their capacity is limited and with long-term blackouts, they cannot last.

The limited capacity of the power backup system means that it cannot guarantee service continuity during long periods of blackout. This translates into interruptions in the landline and mobile telephone service, loss of internet access and even drops in the radio and television signal.
