In implementation of the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai (may God protect him), to complete the stages of the Shindagha Axis development project, to keep pace with the continuous development witnessed by the region along the axis, to accommodate the needs of population growth, and to follow up with His Highness Sheikh Hamdan. Bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council, the Roads and Transport Authority has awarded a contract for the implementation of the Gulf Street Tunnel project, which extends from the end of the slope of the Infinity Bridge in Deira, to the intersection of Gulf Street and Cairo Street. His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority, said: The tunnel implementation project is part of the Shindagha Axis development project, which is one of the largest projects currently implemented by the Authority, and extends along Sheikh Rashid Street, Al Mina Street, Al Khaleej Street, and Cairo Street, with a length of 13 kilometers. It includes the development of 15 interchanges, and serves a number of vital residential areas and development projects, the most important of which are Dubai Islands, Dubai Waterfront, Dubai Maritime City, and Port Rashid. The number of residents served by the project is estimated at one million people, and developing the axis contributes to reducing the travel time from 104 minutes to 16 minutes by 2030 AD.
He added: The project, which is part of the fourth phase, includes the implementation of the Gulf Street Tunnel with a capacity of three lanes in each direction and a length of 1,650 metres, to provide free and smooth traffic movement for those coming from the Infinity Bridge towards Deira and vice versa. It also includes developing the Cairo-Al-Wahida Street intersection with roundregardings. To intersections controlled by traffic lights, as well as implementing some improvements on Cairo Street, and connecting the slope of the bridge coming from Dubai Islands to the new tunnel on Al Khaleej Street towards the north, indicating that this phase of the project serves the areas of Abu Hail, Al Wahida, and Al Mamzar, in addition to development projects. They are: Dubai Islands, Dubai Waterfront, Waterfront Souk, and Hamriya Port.

With a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour, the project also includes developing 4.8 km of roads, in addition to developing surface intersections on Jumeirah Street, Al Mina Street, and Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah Street, and constructing two pedestrian bridges, the first on Sheikh Rashid Street, and the second on Al Mina Street. The project includes the construction of a single-lane bridge for right-turn movement from Khalid Bin Al-Waleed Street to Al-Khaleej Street, with a length of 250 metres, with a capacity of up to 1,600 vehicles per hour, and the construction of a two-lane tunnel for left-turn movement from Khalid Bin Al-Waleed Street to Al-Mina Street, with a length of 500 metres. With a capacity of up to 3,200 vehicles per hour, as well as the construction of a surface intersection controlled by a traffic light linking Al Khaleej Street with Al Ghubaiba Street and Khalid bin Al Waleed Street.
