The rules already agreed with the EU Council establish that from 2030 new trucks, including special vehicles such as garbage trucks, dump trucks or concrete mixers, as well as buses must have a carbon dioxide emission of 45 percent. lower compared to 2019 From 2035 this pollution must decrease by 65 percent, and from 2040 – 90 percent

Pollution reduction targets are also set for truck trailers and semi-trailers. From 2030 they will have to throw out 7.5 percent, respectively. and 10 percent less carbon dioxide.

The new rules oblige the Commission until 2027. to assess their implementation by the end of the year in order to decide whether to apply these rules to small trucks, up to 5 t. weight. At the same time, the Commission should assess the role of the registration methodology for heavy vehicles powered only by carbon-neutral fuels for climate change purposes.

EP rapporteur Bas Eickhout (Greens, Netherlands) noted: “The transition to clean trucks and buses is important not only for the prevention of climate change, but also for cleaner air in our cities. We provide legal certainty to one of the main areas of European industry and encourage investment in electric or hydrogen-powered vehicles.”

EU rules were approved by 341 MEPs, 268 opposed and 14 abstained. They have already been agreed with the Council of the EU, but the formal approval of the said institution is still necessary for the rules to come into force.

Heavy-duty vehicles in the EU account for a quarter of road transport’s greenhouse gas emissions.
