Dakar, April 13 (APS) – The African Union (AU), through the president of its Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, called on Saturday the Malian authorities to reconsider their decision to freeze the activities of political parties and citizen associations and to work towards the completion of the transition process underway in the country.
”The AU Commission strongly underlines the right to citizen participation, religious and political, as a fundamental right and calls on the transitional authorities to reconsider the said decision and work on a roadmap aimed at completing the transition process in progress,” indicates its president in a press release.
Moussa Faki Mahamat notes with “great concern” the publication on April 10, 2024 by the Malian transitional authorities of a decree suspending all activities of political parties and citizen associations in Mali.
The Chadian diplomat thus expresses his ”deep concern regarding this suspension which is likely to hinder the implementation of an inclusive transition process in the country”.
The junta in power in Mali has announced the suspension until further notice of all activities of political parties and political associations throughout the territory, citing “reasons of public order”.
