“In publishing, we rarely see such a phenomenon, when foreign publishers are interested in a work from a small country just a few months following its release. Especially if it is a two-book novel and its volume exceeds 1100 pages. Therefore, we received the news that “Zvaigzne ABC” decided to publish “Coin & Labyrinth” with great joy. It is nice that the first international stop of the dilogy is our neighbors. I have no doubt that the novel will be as catchy and relevant to them as it is to our readers,” says the head of the Baltas lanka publishing house. editor Saulina Kochanskaitė.

“When I wrote the novel, I wanted it to bring joy to at least someone, at least a small group of readers. The fact that it is being translated into Latvian is, for me, the result of the unexpectedly favorable reaction of Lithuanian readers to the book. Therefore, I feel great gratitude to the people, the readers, who appreciated my efforts. It’s a recognition I don’t feel I deserve. And at the same time, I’m a little scared: how will I manage to speak to another audience, another culture, which I didn’t have in mind when I wrote the novel? I look forward to the release of the Latvian translation both with anticipation and with some inner trepidation. And, of course, it is very interesting to hear how it will be called in Latvian. After all, we Lithuanians have a very peculiar and idiosyncratic relationship with the Latvian language”, says the author of the book, M. Adomėnas.

According to the writer, both countries are united by a common historical experience of occupations, a common path to freedom, and now a common enemy, a common threat: “The action of the spy novel described in my novel, if some details were changed, might basically take place in Latvia as well. The reality in which the dramas described in the book unfold should be close and familiar to Latvian readers. On the other hand, I think, – I would like to read a similar novel, the action of which takes place in Riga, and get to know that charming city through it? Therefore, Latvian readers might also want to see the capital of their southern neighbors through the prism of a spy novel.”

The first part of the novel “Moneta & Labirintas” was appreciated not only by readers, but also by experts: the book was nominated in the Book of the Year elections in the category of Prose books and was included in the twelve most creative books of the Institute of Lithuanian Literature and Folklore.

Readers can vote for the Book of the Year until April 23, and the winners will be announced on May 7.
