Pulse Elite: the ultimate headset for PS5 players?

Pulse Elite: the ultimate headset for PS5 players?

After a first “Pulse” headset model, Sony persists and signs with the Pulse Elite, a “premium” version of its headset, which incorporates some notable improvements.

You probably remember the Pulse, this headset for PlayStation gamers with a futuristic design, which was an opportunity at the time for Sony to push “3D audio” on its machine. Sony persists and signs with its Pulse Elite, which corrects certain defects of its predecessor while introducing several new features.

We are in the rather premium segment here, since the headset is still sold for €149 in stores. A price which is largely justified by the on-board technology and the quality of the product – we will come back to this. However, it should be noted for those who did not appreciate the singular design of the Pulse, the Pulse Elite follows in its footsteps and sports a very particular design. Love it or hate it. One thing is certain, the design leaves no stone unturned. Where, however, there is room for discussion is in terms of finishing. The plastic finish goes a little less well in this premium segment. At €149, we have the right to expect slightly more noble materials.

The Sony headset has only one flaw: its microphone, which is not really remarkable.

Rest assured, however, with the exception of the design, the Pulse Elite should make almost everyone agree on its qualities.

First of all, in terms of connectivity, we are spoiled for choice. The headset can work wired, Bluetooth or with a dongle. It’s plug & play and it works admirably on PS5. The headset comes with a classy hook, which allows it to be recharged while storing it “cleanly”. You can also use it on PC with the dongle, but let’s be honest, you will easily find better alternatives on this platform.

In terms of design, the Pulse Elite is very pleasant to wear. Comfort is optimal thanks to the headband system which relieves any form of pressure on the head. The memory foam pads are well padded and very comfortable to wear. On the other hand, the layer of imitation leather seems very thin and might therefore quickly become damaged over time.

On the audio side, the findings are also very positive. The sound reproduction is perfect, largely thanks to the planar transducers, new to this model. Bass sounds are slightly amplified, adding to the drama of the action in some games. Overall, however, the sound is really very well calibrated. Like its predecessor, the headset delivers “spatial” 3D sound which allows you to instantly know where a sound is coming from in the game, and therefore more easily locate an enemy. The technology is really well established and perfectly exploited by Sony.

Another advantage of the headset: its solid autonomy. Count on up to 23 hours, according to our calculations, on a single charge. This is well above average.

In the end, the Sony headset has only one small flaw: its microphone, which is much too timid, which will tend to erase your voice a little. It’s a shame because as a result, we often find ourselves raising our voices. Given the price, we had the right to expect more… But rest assured, it’s not dramatic. And if you use it mainly for single-player games, it will have no impact on your gaming experience. Given the excellence of its 3D sound, the Pulse Elite remains one of the best choices, if not THE essential choice for all PS5 players.

The +:

  • A complete immersion
  • Sound quality
  • Good connectivity
  • Perfect for playing on PS5
  • A decent price
  • Real comfort of use

THE – :

  • A design that will not please everyone
  • The finish is a bit cheap considering the price
  • The quality of the microphone
  • Not for PC gaming

So, are we cracking?

With its unique design, the Sony Pulse Elite will divide the crowds. One thing is certain however, on a purely sound level, this is an excellent gaming headset, which offers perfect sound reproduction. Sold for €149 in stores, the accessory is easy to connect (plug & play), offers several connectivity modes, and has solid battery life. It is specifically intended for gaming on PS5. If it is compatible with the PC, we will easily find more convincing alternatives. If it ticks all the boxes of excellence, we will however note two faults which will perhaps be blocking for some: a very particular design, and a microphone of fairly average quality given the price. Rest assured, it works, but your voice will not be as crystal clear as you hope… If you only play solo, it stands out as the absolute reference on PS5.
