After the Swiss Government announced the imposition of sanctions once morest five officials of the Public Ministry (MP) and a judge for allegedly trying to prevent the inauguration of President Bernardo Arévalo de León, the head of the Special Prosecutor’s Office Against Impunity (Feci) , Rafel Curruchiche, criticized this decision and attacked some ambassadors.
These sanctions affect the attorney general, María Consuelo Porras Argueta, the secretary general Ángel Arnoldo Pineda Ávila, the head of the Feci, José Rafael Curruchiche Cucul, the prosecutor Leonor Eugenia Morales Lazo de Sánchez and judge Fredy Raúl Orellana Letona.
Curruchiche said in an interview that was published on the X account @AztecaNoticiaGT that the sanctions imposed by Switzerland are absurd, silly, ridiculous and stupid
“This is an absurd sanction, it is a stupid sanction, it is a ridiculous sanction, it is a totally stupid sanction, (…) because “there are countries that do not even know where Guatemala is,” said Curruchiche.
He added that these countries must be seen from two points of view, “one is that we have suffered attacks from foreign governments, but more so now from this government that has insisted that we not investigate them, from that account it is that the president Bernardo Arévalo tours Europe and that is the narrative that he has gone to sell.”
During his speech, Curruchiche assured that “there are countries that do not even know where Guatemala, Bosnia, etc. are. They simply repeat a silly, ridiculous and stupid narrative of these countries that do not even know where Guatemala is.”
“There are some fourth and fifth category ambassadors, including this man who is the ambassador of the European Union in Guatemala, Mr. Thomas Peyker, there is another second and third category ambassador, a certain Josué Fiallo who I believe is from the Dominican Republic or from a tropical country over there who have joined this narrative,” said the prosecutor.
Details
After his victory in the August 2023 elections, Arévalo de León faced serious difficulties in being sworn in as president due to several actions taken by the Prosecutor’s Office.
Through the restrictive measures, which came into force the same followingnoon last Wednesday, the Confederation prohibits Consuelo Porras and the other four members of the Public Ministry from entering the Swiss country and subjects them to financial sanctions.
These actions carried out by those sanctioned “would have attempted to hinder the peaceful transfer of power” in the country and represent “a threat to democracy and the rule of law”, according to the Swiss Government.
