Yesterday, the Norwegian Prime Minister announced his country’s readiness to recognize the Palestinian state, in cooperation with other countries, in the presence of his Spanish counterpart, Pedro Sanchez, who calls for this.
Jonas Gahr Sture said, during a joint press conference with Sanchez: “Norway is ready to make a decision regarding recognition of the Palestinian state.” He added: “This decision must be taken on the basis of timing and context, in close cooperation with like-minded countries, and we have not set a specific timetable.” The Norwegian Parliament adopted a motion in November presented by the ruling parties, demanding that the government prepare to recognize an independent Palestinian state.
Norway hosted the first Israeli-Palestinian peace talks in the early 1990s, which led to the Oslo Accords, in which the two parties accepted the peaceful coexistence of two independent states.
For his part, the Spanish Prime Minister toured this week during which he visited Poland, Norway and Ireland to address “the necessity of moving towards recognition of Palestine,” according to a Spanish government spokesman.
Sanchez stressed that “Spain is publicly committed to recognizing the Palestinian state as soon as conditions are appropriate, and in a way that has the greatest positive impact on the peace process.”
According to the media, which accompanied him on a tour last week, which led him to a number of countries in the region, the Spanish official identified the end of June as the horizon for the Spanish government to recognize this country. The Norwegian official said: “I welcome Prime Minister Sanchez’s initiative to consult with like-minded countries to enhance coordination, and we will intensify this coordination in the coming weeks.”
Sanchez also strongly criticizes the position of the Israeli government led by Benjamin Netanyahu since the beginning of the war in Gaza.
