CINEMA OF TOMORROW
One of the best films of the LXXV International Film Festival, which is held at the Cineteca Nacional and other venues in the capital, is the fourteenth film by the Italian Alice Rorhwacher, “La chimera”
The script by Carmela Covino and Marco Petenello tells the story of Arthur (Josh O’connor), a ragged Englishman with the strange ability to find Italian tombs, which allow a band of destitute and party-goers Tuscans to survive.
At the beginning of the film we see an angry Arthur return to town and try to ignore his associates.
He seeks refuge with Doña Flora (Isabella Rossellini) whose daughter he was engaged to and who is well treated by the old woman.
Arthur and his partners are actually minnows who are exploited by the invisible Spartacus (Alba Rohrwacher), who is the one who gets rich from tomb looting.
But Arthur will meet Italia (Carol Duarte), a single mother with two children, who will make him reflect on his profession and encourage him to change his life.
The director of “Futura” achieves an endearing portrait of a group of unique characters, well played by O’Connor and an unrecognizable Isabella Rosselini.
La Chimera won awards at European Festivals and in Chicago and is one of the films in the Show that should not be missed.
