France – The International Association of Athletics Federations announced on Wednesday that it will award financial prizes to gold medal winners during the Olympic Games in Paris, scheduled to begin on July 26.
The Federation stated, on its website, that the gold medal winners in each of the 48 athletics competitions in Paris will receive $50,000, with the total prize pool amounting to $2.4 million from the share of the International Olympic Committee’s revenues that the International Federation receives every 4 years.
Each individual Olympic champion will receive $50,000, while the relay teams will receive the same amount to be shared among the team members.
The Athletics Federation, which will be the first international sports federation to take this step, added that the financial prizes will also include silver and bronze medal winners, starting from the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
The President of the International Federation, British Sebastian Coe, commented on the decision, saying: “Providing financial prizes to the winners of Olympic gold medals is a pivotal moment for World Athletics and the Mother of the Games as a whole, which confirms the International Federation’s commitment to empowering athletes and recognizing the crucial role they play in the success of any Olympic Games.” “.
He continued: “This is a continuation of a journey we started in 2015, which sees all the money the IAAF receives from the IOC for the Olympic Games go straight back into our sport.”
Coe revealed that the International Federation is in a position to finance the rewards for the gold medal winners in Paris, with a commitment to reward all three medal winners at the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028.
