Rabat.. A Moroccan-Australian project to develop green energy

Rabat – Morocco announced a joint project with Australia to develop green energy, aiming to provide hydrogen, ammonia and green fertilizers in Morocco, Europe and international markets.

This came according to a statement by the Office Chérifien des Phosphates group in Morocco (OCP – a government company) published by the official news agency on Monday evening.

She said that the project is joint with the Australian company Fortescue Energy, with the aim of developing green energy in Morocco.

According to the statement, the partnership aims to “provide green hydrogen, green ammonia, and green fertilizers in Morocco, Europe, and international markets.”

The partnership includes the potential development of manufacturing equipment and a research and development center to advance the rapidly growing renewable energy industry in Morocco, according to the same source.

It also includes “a plan for four major projects in Morocco, the first of which is a large-scale integrated production capacity for green ammonia and green fertilizers, including renewable energy, power generation, electrolysis, ammonia liberation and fertilizer production.”

While the second project is “manufacturing green technology and equipment,” according to the statement.

The third project “represents the creation of a center for research, development and technology, located near the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (governmental) near Marrakesh (north), to enhance research in renewable energies, green hydrogen and mineral processing.”

While the fourth project, according to the same statement, “relates to cooperation between business venture capital funds in order to stimulate investment in major technological developments.”

In addition to the above, the partnership aims to “provide green hydrogen and green ammonia, for use both as a source of green energy and in the manufacture of carbon-neutral fertilizers to provide them at a reasonable cost to all farmers around the world,” according to the statement.

Green hydrogen is a type of fuel resulting from a chemical process in which an electric current resulting from renewable sources is used to separate hydrogen from oxygen in water, thus producing energy without emitting carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which causes global warming.

On March 11, 2024, the Moroccan government announced the launch of the green hydrogen project, indicating that 100 national and international investors had expressed interest in it.

In September 2023, the Moroccan government said that the country intends to launch a green hydrogen project in 2024, amid a global increase in investment in this source of energy.
