América, the current Mexican champion, led by Brazilian coach André Jardine, winner of San Luis 2-1 on Friday, became the new leader of the Clausura 2024 Mexican soccer tournament, at the end of the thirteenth day this Sunday.
At the Azteca Stadium, their home, the Águilas won with scores from the Chilean Diego Valdés and the Uruguayan Brian Rodríguez to reach eight wins, four draws, one defeat and 28 points, the same as Monterrey, which they surpass by better difference of goals.
America jumped to the lead thanks to the victory of its staunchest enemy, the Chivas del Guadalajara of Argentine coach Fernando Gago, 0-2 over the Rayados de Monterrey.
This Saturday an own goal from Héctor Moreno and a goal from Ricardo Marín gave Chivas the victory in a duel in which they played the second half with one extra man and the last eight minutes, with two, due to the expulsion of Gerardo Arteaga and the Argentine Jorge Rodríguez.
In the other match this Saturday, Portuguese coach Renato Paiva’s Toluca rose to third place, beating Pachuca of Uruguayan strategist Guillermo Almada 2-3.
