New Environmental Permit Limits Flight Movements at Liege Airport: What You Need to Know

The Walloon government approved a new environmental permit for Liege Airport at the end of January 2023, limiting its annual flight movements to 55,000. This restriction was the result of a political agreement at the majority level, with Environment Minister Céline Tellier initially wanting to lower it to 50,000 units.

However, the reasons for the permit include the figure of 50,000 flight movements. Contacted by the Canopea and Dryade associations, the Council of State examined the matter and the auditor issued a negative opinion, recommending the cancellation of the permit which runs until 2040, according to L’Echo. This opinion is not binding but the high court generally follows its auditor.

“Waiting for the decision of the Council of State concerning the single permit when the probability is high that it will follow the opinion given by its auditor, does not seem to us to be either recommended or judicious,” estimates the airport in a legal analysis transmitted to Walloon ministers and which L’Echo was able to consult. Liège Airport fears it will have to immediately stop its activities if the Council of State cancels its permit.

He therefore asks the Walloon government to rectify the situation, without waiting for a legal decision. An analysis shared by the Walloon Minister of Airports Adrien Dolimont. The latter excludes renegotiating the number of flight movements, which Ecolo would however like, to lower the limit to 50,000 units, the daily further indicates.
