NBA Play-In Tournament: The Mode

The play-in tournament consists of three games per conference. First, the seventh-placed team meets the eighth-placed team in the final table of the regular season. The seventh-placed team has home advantage in this game. The winner of this so-called “Seven-Eight Games” qualifies for the playoffs and gets the 7-seed.

In the “Nine-Ten Game”, the tenth-placed player plays once morest the ninth-placed team, and the winner of this game has to play once morest the loser of the “Seven-Eight Game” in the final play-in game. Whoever wins this duel will get the last playoff place in the respective conference.

This means that the seventh and eighth placed teams have a slight advantage. One win is enough for them to make the playoffs perfect, while the ninth and tenth placed teams have to win two games.

At the same time, unlike in previous years, participation in the playoffs is not guaranteed for the seventh and eighth place teams.
