The Cypriot President is in Lebanon to discuss the issues of illegal immigration and maritime demarcation

Lebanon – Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides arrived on Monday in Beirut, on a visit during which he will meet officials and discuss common files between the two countries, most notably illegal immigration and maritime borders in the Mediterranean.

At the government headquarters in central Beirut, bilateral talks were held between the Cypriot President and Najib Mikati, head of the caretaker government, as he is entrusted with the powers of the President of the Republic in light of the presidential vacancy.

Media sources reported that “the most important files up for discussion are illegal immigration from Lebanon to Cyprus and cooperation in controlling it, and the file of demarcating maritime borders.”

The Cypriot President is also scheduled to meet with the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri, where the most prominent files on the Lebanese arena will be discussed.

This comes as the Israeli army announced the end of a phase of preparations for the possibility of launching a military operation on the Lebanese border.

Since October 8, the border between Lebanon and Israel has witnessed intermittent clashes between Lebanese Hezbollah and Israeli forces since the outbreak of the war in Gaza, as Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah announced that the Lebanon front is a front “in support of Gaza.”

In this regard, the United Nations and UNIFIL warned on Monday of the dangers of expanding the scope and scale of confrontations in southern Lebanon.
