“2024 will be a decisive year for Ciné Cinéma”, underlined the president, Marc Bécret, during the general assembly of the art house association, Monday April 8 at the Théâtre de Périgueux (Dordogne). This meeting was an opportunity to take stock and discuss perspectives.

Attendance increased by 13% in 2023, where 42,066 spectators were welcomed. There were 800 members in December, 150 more than the previous year. 80 thematic events were organized. A large part of the activity was dedicated to schools and young people, from nursery school to IUT. A detailed and quantified report was presented by the two employees of the association, Jean-Michel Hellio and Julia Caron.

But there is still a management deficit. It is now only 652 euros, while it reached 16,800 euros in 2022. This improvement is due to new aid, in particular from the Department, and the increase in the price of the membership card. But the structural problem will arise once more next year.

Renewal of the agreement

This situation led to measures being taken: increased mobilization of volunteers, computer diagnostics, better communication. And it is above all the question of the future that arises. The agreement which binds the association, the City of Périgueux and the CGR group for 2025-2027 must be renewed before the end of the year. It is she who defines the conditions of Ciné Cinéma’s activity within the multiplex.

A meeting in the presence of the three parties took place on January 30 at the town hall. For the immediate future, the association has requested new time slots and ticketing incentives. She has just received responses from the CGR group. On the positive side, he proposes to grant Ciné Cinéma a financial donation of a maximum of 14,400 euros, which excludes profit-sharing from ticket sales, but constitutes a significant contribution. On the negative side, CGR is asking for an increase of €0.40 in the entrance ticket. The association will make counter-proposals and a new meeting is planned for the end of April.

From these first contacts, Marc Bécret is certain that the agreement will be renewed. It will be “an unsatisfactory compromise” to be considered “as a necessary and transitional evil”, he noted during the discussion.

A public cinema

The objective is the creation of a public arthouse cinema. For Cinema Cinema, there are two options. Either the purchase of empty commercial premises in the CGR building by the City, or the creation of a cinema elsewhere in Périgueux. The Place Francheville project, with the development of a community café, has already been mentioned several times. As Rodolphe Delcros, deputy for culture, recalled, the municipality is interested. This would bring commercial activity back to this sector.

These projects involve new commitments for Ciné Cinéma, such as obtaining the exhibitor card. It’s up to the association to prepare, to “open a new phase”.
