The electoral campaign for the European elections has begun and addresses the situation with Massimiliano Romeo, group leader in the Senate of the League.
The political forces have now left the starting blocks in view of the June elections. What direction is the League going in?
«We are highlighting the fact that the European Union must be changed at all costs, sending home those who dictated the green agenda with an ideological, crazy approach. We are referring to the European socialists who influenced the entire political impact on the energy transition, which was approached ideologically and without taking into account gradualness and economic sustainability. In this context, we oppose, with conviction, above all the directive on green homes which, although it has been modified, is still very burdensome and might cost Italian families between 35 thousand and 60 thousand euros. We want to defend the real estate assets of Italians and prevent them from ending up in the hands of large funds that invest in real estate in the future. We are for a Europe that is not a super-state, but respects peoples’ autonomies and identities.”
A much debated point around your European positioning, however, concerns your allied movements in the Identity and Democracy group, with very extremist positions on some issues.
«In reality we try to make a pragmatic reasoning because the League has never been either right or left: if we want to send the socialists home we need everyone’s help».
In recent weeks a story has been developing, that is, a fibrillation of the “northern” area of the League. Does it worry you?
«There is a comparison between the most historical soul of the movement and the new course. Nothing to worry regarding, it happens in all parties that there are discussions. Being united, however, is the most important thing. First of all because we must always be grateful to the movement we belong to; and then because certain things can very well be discussed and discussed in the competent forums, avoiding starting controversies in newspapers and the media which risk damaging everyone. Even more so considering that we are on the eve of the European elections.”
This theme, however, is connected to a soap opera that has been around for months: should you nominate General Vannacci or not?
«It is a decision that falls to Secretary Salvini and the Federal Council. We certainly already have many valid candidates from the area. Specifically on Vannacci, however, even if I don’t agree with part of what he claims, since he had the courage to challenge political correctness, his candidacy can fit in a party like the League which has one of its cornerstones in the defense of freedom. However, whether he is nominated or not, it will be up to whoever has the task of doing so. I’m sorry, however, that we are incessantly talking only regarding this and very little regarding the many figures we have in the area and the outgoing MEPs who have done an excellent job in recent years between Strasbourg and Brussels”.
It’s been an eventful week in the confrontation with the left. Pd and 5 Star very compact on the motions of no confidence, rejected, once morest Salvini and Santanché. Then once more splits in Bari, due to the widening of the legal troubles on some exponents of the local centre-left. What lesson is drawn from this?
«We must be grateful to have such an opposition without arguments. The motions of no confidence were a waste of time. Own goal following own goal committed due to a desire for visibility, they help us win every match.”
