After the world championship, the Bischofshofen martial arts talent also won the European championship. After great success at amateur level, the 21-year-old is now planning on making his professional debut.
Reigning IMMAF Featherweight World Champion Elias Erber recently traveled to the European Championships to compete with the elite of the continent’s amateur MMA sport in Belgrade.
After the 21-year-old Pongauer fought his way through the tournament with several referee decisions, he faced the Frenchman Ugo-Antton Vidal in the final. “These tournaments are always a big challenge. Because adjusting to a different opponent within a day, making weight once more and maintaining concentration is difficult,” says the Pongau MMA talent.
TKO in the final brings gold medal
Erber was on the accelerator from the start of the final round, got into dangerous positions and had to take some punishment. The Pongauer came close to victory in the first round, but was able to go one better in the second round and secured victory over his French colleague with a TKO. The 21-year-old was once once more on the top podium of a major IMMAF event and was able to celebrate another gold medal. “With every success, the pressure to continue to show these performances naturally increases,” admits Erber. “That’s precisely why I’m extremely pleased that I was able to confirm my success at the World Championships with the European Championship title.”
Entry into the professional business is imminent
Just a few days following winning the European title, the Bischofshofen native is already planning for the future. The entry into the professional business is imminent. “We are probably planning to switch to the professionals at the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2025. Then everything will start once more from scratch.” With a well-filled trophy cabinet, Erber is looking forward to the change very positively. “First I want to assert myself in the German-Austrian professional area and then hopefully fight my way up the ranks.”
