G. Landsbergis: I don’t think European leaders can agree on the deployment of troops in Ukraine

“I don’t believe there is a chance to agree on this. In the past, we have proven that we cannot agree on less sensitive issues, so I don’t think we can agree on this,” G. Landsbergis, who arrived at the Council of Foreign Affairs of the European Union (EU) in Brussels, told reporters.

This is what he said when asked if the leaders of European countries will discuss a unified position regarding the deployment of troops in Ukraine.

“As for my country, we are ready to consider all options and participate in coalitions that help Ukraine win this war,” G. Landsbergis said.

According to him, Monday’s EU Foreign Affairs Council provides an opportunity to talk once more regarding Russia’s war once morest Ukraine, “to congratulate the Ukrainians for their achievements despite our inability to offer help.”

“On the other hand, we will talk regarding things that we cannot give to Ukraine. We cannot agree on a new sanctions package. “Obviously, there are difficulties in finding a date for the interstate conference that would start Ukraine’s membership negotiations, and we also cannot agree on additional military support for Ukraine and many other things,” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

“There are good things and there are always, from our side we will not only pay attention to the situation in Ukraine, but we will be a bit more political and offer our support,” added G. Landsbergis.

On Monday, the Foreign Affairs Council is scheduled to discuss Russia’s aggression once morest Ukraine, Belarus and the situation in the Middle East. There will also be an informal ministerial discussion with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, who will participate remotely.

On Tuesday, G. Landsbergis will take part in a discussion with MEPs regarding the future expansion of the EU organized by the European Parliament (EP) Foreign Affairs Committee, during which he will emphasize the need to start membership negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova as soon as possible.
