United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres today called for independent investigations into the deaths of all 196 aid workers killed in the Gaza Strip during the war between Israel and Hamas, saying he hoped Israel quickly and efficiently will boost access to help.
International outrage over the humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian enclave of 2.3 million people escalated following three Israeli raids on Monday killed seven people working at food distribution charity World Central Kitchen.
Today the Israeli military announced that its investigation into the attacks on the aid convoy found serious errors and violations in the process.
“The Israeli government has recognized mistakes,” Guterres pointed out. “But the main problem is not who committed the mistakes, it is the military strategy and the procedures that were put in place that allowed the mistakes to multiply once more and once more.”
“Fixing these failures requires independent investigations and meaningful and measurable changes in the field,” he said, without specifying who should conduct the investigations. “One hundred and ninety-six aid workers have been killed and we want to know why each one of them was killed.”
The 15-member UN Security Council convened today to discuss the impending famine in Gaza and attacks on aid workers. “If we met in northern Gaza, all 15 of us would skip meals,” said Slovenia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Samuel Zbogar. “The 10 of us would go whole days and nights without eating. Half of us would be in desperate need of humanitarian aid.”
Britain’s ambassador to the United Nations, Barbara Woodward, said aid workers should never be targeted, adding: “Israel must do much more to protect them and guarantee their safety so they can deliver life-saving aid.” for life humanitarian aid”.
Israel approved the reopening of the Erez station in northern Gaza and the temporary use of Ashdod port in southern Israel following US President Joe Biden called for steps to ease the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
“When the entrances to aid are closed, the doors of famine are opened. More than 50% of the population, more than 1 million people, is facing catastrophic hunger. Children today in Gaza are dying from lack of food and water,” Guterres told reporters. “This is incomprehensible and completely avoidable,” he stressed.
