UK’s Stance on Israel: Support Depends on Adherence to International Law

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron said in a newspaper article on Sunday that Britain’s support for Israel depends on its commitment to international humanitarian law, days following an Israeli air strike that killed seven aid workers, including three Britons.

“We do not offer unconditional support,” Cameron wrote in the Sunday Times. “We expect a successful democratic country to adhere to international humanitarian law, even when faced with challenges.”

Cameron warned on Sunday of the risk of mass starvation unless Israel allows more aid to enter. Britain said yesterday that it would provide a navy ship to contribute to shipping aid as part of an international effort.

In a statement issued on Sunday, coinciding with the six-month anniversary of the Hamas attack, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak repeated his call for the movement to release the Israeli hostages and to immediately stop the fighting.

He added, “We continue to stand by Israel’s right to eliminate the threat posed by Hamas… but the entire United Kingdom is shocked by the bloodshed and horrified by the killing of brave British heroes who were providing food to those in need.”
