PARIS (AP) — Ethiopians Mulugeta Uma and Mestawut Fikir emerged victorious in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively, of the Paris Marathon in their first attempts Sunday.

Uma was running alone towards the finish line at the Arc de Triomphe, but she almost collided with a judge as she approached the final bend. Uma recovered from the inconvenience and pointed towards the audience while celebrating the victory.

He clocked a time of 2 hours, 5 minutes and 33 seconds to beat the Kenyans Titus Kipruto (2:05.48) and Elisha Rotich (2:06.54), the latter champion of the 2021 edition.

Fikir had to go deeper than Uma, pulling away from his compatriot Enat Tirusew in the final stretch.

Tirusew ran inch by inch with her until Fikir looked at his watch and quickened his pace to win with a time of 2:20:45. Tirusew arrived three seconds late.

Vivian Cheruiyot, the 40-year-old Kenyan and multiple Olympic and world medalist in the 5,000 and 10,00 meters — was third in 2:21.46.
