According to the US Embassy in Haiti, the plane took off from the port city of Cap Haitien, where the airport is periodically opened.
“The State Department assisted the safe departure of more than 30 US citizens from Cap Haitien, Haiti, on a US government chartered flight,” a State Department spokesman told AFP late Sunday.
“These passengers are currently safely in Miami, Florida, where US government officials are assisting with follow-up,” he added.
Haiti has been plagued by gang violence in recent weeks aimed at ousting Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who announced his resignation last week.
The number of armed groups in Haiti has increased sharply following an attack on two prisons freed thousands of inmates.
A recent United Nations report warns that basic services are currently almost non-existent in Haiti.
The chaos in the country has left many people vulnerable. It is currently awaiting the formation of an interim governing council that will take over following the resignation of the Prime Minister.
A spokesman said on Sunday that the State Department is currently considering how to leave Port-au-Prince for Americans remaining in Haiti and will notify them as soon as they can ensure their safe departure.
“We will continue to provide assistance to U.S. citizens until commercial opportunities and security conditions allow us to do so,” they added, urging U.S. citizens wishing to leave Haiti to contact them through their website.
Earlier this month, the U.S. said it had removed non-essential American personnel from its embassy in the Haitian capital and brought in additional security guards to provide increased security.
Several other countries and the European Union have evacuated diplomatic staff due to the crisis.
The UN also announced the evacuation of non-essential workers.
Kenya has offered to lead an international security mission to help police in Haiti as the state of emergency in the Western Hemisphere’s poorest country is set to end on April 3.
