The second day of the 15th Congress of New Democracy, which has an anniversary character, is underway, as this year marks 50 years since the founding of the party. 2,742 executives from all over the country are present, including representatives of expatriate Greeks.
Representatives of the European People’s Party and the European Parliament will address the ND Congress. Today the EPP president Manfred Weber of the European People’s Party will speak and tomorrow the president of the European Union Ursula von der Leyen.
With multiple messages and references to the stakes of the European elections, the prime minister’s speech at the opening of the New Democracy Conference, signaling the start of the pre-election race. “No to experimentation, yes to stability,” he stressed, referring to the actions of the government of the previous 5 years. Referring to Stefanos Kasselakis, he spoke of an imported leader who insults Democracy and institutions, while for Nikos Androulakis he said that he is painting his party with the colors of the first one so that a third one does not come. He noted that we must bow our heads over Sunday’s killing and taxi the patrol cars, if necessary, to protect the citizens.
In particular, today, Saturday, April 6, the positions of the delegates will be held in four thematic sections, which are: “50 Years of ND: The ideas and people”, “50 Years of ND: For a strong Greece in Europe”, “50 Years of ND: For human-centered development” and “50 Years of ND: It grows because it evolves”.
ND general manager Ioannis Smyrlis, in his intervention at the 15th Congress of ND, said among other things that “ND is not the protagonist in the political history of the country by chance, it has deep roots in society, it expresses liberal and pioneering ideas centered on people”. He also added that “we have played a leading role in strategic choices for the country, in emblematic reforms, we have drawn up robust long-term policies that history and time have justified, and we continue to create policies that respond to contemporary problems and seek to face the challenges of the future.” He referred to the ND’s victory in two consecutive electoral contests, the ND’s effective governance, the handling of major crises without leaving any Greek woman or Greek man behind. “ND was, is and will be the party that believes in and serves the welfare state,” he said characteristically. He referred to the achievements of the government of the last five years and made special mention of the postal vote and the satisfaction through it of a permanent request of Hellenism.
On Sunday, April 7, the speeches of the Secretary of the Political Committee Maria Syregela, the President of the Organizing Committee Yiannis Plakiotakis, the Vice-President of the European Commission Margaritis Schinas, the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulidis and the candidate of the EPP for the Presidency of the European Commission will be held Ursula von der Leyen.
Before the end of the work, the Prime Minister and President of the New Democracy, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, will address the body of delegates.
At the Conference, there will be stands of foreign institutions that have long-term cooperation with the ND (Konrad-Adenauer, Wilfried Martens, Hanns Seidel) as well as the Konstantinos Karamanlis Institute of Democracy (IDKK), while there will also be an exhibition of photographic and audio-visual material that will capture the Path of the Parataxis in its 50 years of history.
