Hugo Beteta will be the next Ambassador of Guatemala to the United States

The Government of Guatemala mentions that the United States has already given its approval for the economist Hugo Beteta to be the ambassador in that country.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Minex) of Guatemala announced this April 4 that economist Hugo Beteta will be appointed as the next Ambassador of Guatemala to the United States, based in Washington, DC

Beteta was the candidate proposed by the Government of Guatemala and according to Minex, this person has received the approval of the Government of the United States of America to occupy that position.

This appointment is in process and it is mentioned that the respective agreement is being prepared for Beteta to take office soon.

According to Minex, Beteta had a strategic participation in the recent official tour of President Bernardo Arévalo in the United States.

Beteta has an extensive professional career in the economic and diplomatic fields.

His previous experience includes roles in international organizations that give him a good understanding of bilateral relations between Guatemala and the United States.

Beteta is a graduate of the Rafael Landívar University in Guatemala where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering Sciences.

In addition, he obtained a master’s degree in Civil Engineering and Administration, as well as one in Regional Urban Planning from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, United States.

He also completed a PhD in Development Economics and Urban Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and earned a certificate in Macroeconomic Management from Harvard University.

In the workplace, he was subregional director of the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) from 2011 to 2023.

He was general secretary of the Inter-American Development Bank between 2007 and 2009 and was also Minister of Finance of Guatemala between 2006 and 2007.

He was also the National Secretary of Planning of Guatemala, dean of the Faculty of Economics and Administration and vice-rector of the Rafael Landívar University of Guatemala.

He speaks Spanish, English and Portuguese, according to his resume, and has published research publications.
