The Industrial Area of Tripoli is gradually turning into a drug production hub, with investments of 180 million euros and 1,000 new jobs.

Three Greek pharmaceutical companies are currently setting up production units for substances and drugs in the Tripoli Biotechnology Institute, proving that Greece can be a drug production center for the whole of Europe.

With the completion of the investment, the companies DEMO, WINMEDICA of the ELPEN group and FARAN, we will have for the first time in Greece the possibility of producing raw materials.

The new production units will be able to meet the demand for a number of critical medicines not only in our country but also for the whole of Europe.

The new production units of WINMEDICA – a company of the ELPEN group – will be able to cover 25% of the needs for oncology treatments by 2028.

With the completion of DEMO’s investment, we will for the first time in the country have the possibility of producing raw materials, while the pharmaceutical industry will be among the 3 largest production units of penicillin and oncology drugs in Europe, covering 35% of the EU’s needs.

FARAN’s investment is in progress, while, according to information from pelop.gr, in the wider area, two more Greek pharmaceutical companies are looking for suitable plots of land, exploring the possibility of setting up factories.

The creation of the new production units will contribute to the economic development of the wider region, since it will mean the stimulation of employment with the creation of thousands of direct and indirect jobs.

The VIPE of Patrons

At the same time, investment stagnation, as well as lockouts, can be observed in the Patrons Industrial Park. The last factory closure that took place last September belongs to Crown Hellas Can which in turn opened a cycle of lockouts in the industry nationwide.

Crown Hellas Can for the closure of its factory in Patras, which had an annual production capacity of 900 million metal cans with a capacity of 33 cl, and the production line of the “Tips Division” in Corinth, cited the low utilization of production, the high cost of purchasing metal, the high cost of energy consumption and low domestic demand for the unique container size that might be produced.

In terms of investments, so far no new production units have been built with the exception of the Patras VIPE, with the exception of the Integrated Recycling Center of the company “Lipantika Achaias S.A.” by Dimitris Livadaros.

Also, the latest investment that got the “green light” for its implementation at the Patras Industrial and Commercial Plant, concerns a biodiesel production unit with a capacity of 112,500 kiloliters per year by “P.N. PETTAS SA”. The investment project was recently licensed by the Ministry of Environment and Energy.

For the rest, ongoing investments concern acquisitions and expansions of existing production units, such as the new VIANEX Research Center, for the development of new pharmaceutical products, an investment of 10 million euros.

The other major move made at the Patras IPO in November 2023 was by Pharmathen, a leading company in the development and distribution of compounded innovative pharmaceuticals in Europe, which proceeded to acquire CBL Patras (“CBL”), a vertically integrated peptide production company technology and approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Founded in 1990 by Professor Kleomeni Barlo, CBL is one of Europe’s leading suppliers of peptide materials, offering peptide raw materials and peptide intermediates, as well as industrial and commercial scale proprietary and generic GMP peptides.
