15min continues the “Science of…” series of articles, in which scientists answer important and pressing questions on a variety of topics, from health to space.
This time we are talking regarding hydrogen production and its risks.
More from the series “Science regarding…”
Hydrogen production may increase in Lithuania – here in the territory of the current thermal power plant in Vilnius (Elektrinės st. 2) a green hydrogen plant should emerge, and the city plans to purchase 16 buses, from which the water produced by the splitting of hydrogen will flow from the exhaust pipe.
In recent weeks, plans in Žemaitija were also in the center of public attention – the company “European Energy” wants to build hydrogen and e.methanol factory in Kretinga or Akmene districts.
Not only that, both the Minister of Energy Darius Kreivys and representatives of Ignitis have talked regarding the fact that Lithuania may have an energy island in the Baltic Sea in the future, where hydrogen would be produced from the electricity generated by offshore wind.
Lithuanian scientists are also interested in how hydrogen can be applied in energy.
A Hydrogen Energy Technology Center has been established at the Lithuanian Energy Institute (LEI) in Kaunas, where nine people work.
About what hydrogen is characterized by and how it can be used, 15min spoke with the center’s senior researcher Marius Urbonavičius.
