Netflix has released a new adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s legendary work, “The Talented Mr. Ripley”, on its platform, this time in the form of an eight-episode series with Andrew Scott and Dakota Fanning in the main roles.
The series, which is the latest interpretation of the 1955 novel, first adapted for the big screen in 1999, takes viewers on a journey around the world, following the fate of a conman, Tom Ripley, who sets out to find the wealthy Dickie Greenleaf. Where exactly were these breathtaking scenes filmed?
Italy and New York: Scenery straight from dreams
Most scenes of the series “Ripley” were filmed in Italy – the country of excellent pasta, pizza and wine.
It was the picturesque Amalfi Coast that served as the main background for most of the series, as in the 1999 film adaptation. However, this is not the only Italian location that captured the hearts of the series’ creators.
Venetian canals and characteristic gondolas also found their place in the series, adding a unique Italian atmosphere to it.
Another significant place that appeared on screen is the church of Santa Maria La Nova in Naples, which is a historical landmark of the city.
There were also scenes shot in Rome, where the impressive Palazzo dei Congressi building was used as a background.
The beginning of the New York adventure
The series begins in New York, from where the main character, a talented fraudster, goes to Italy to find the son of a rich man. It is in the bustling streets of New York that Tom Ripley’s intriguing story begins, taking viewers to one of the most beautiful countries in Europe.
Work and pleasure in the shadow of the pandemic
Dakota Fanning, who plays Marge Sherwood, shared her impressions from the set with Vogue magazine:
We traveled a lot. We had to take tests for the Covid-19 virus, which was quite stressful. (…) Frequent traveling also means a lot of time spent away from home. I was a single American whose family hadn’t traveled abroad since the pandemic began, so no one wanted to come see me because they didn’t want me to get sick. [śmiech]
– says Dakota.
Despite the difficulties of filming the series during the pandemic, the actors managed to find time for meals and wine tasting together, which only proves that even in difficult circumstances you can find moments of joy.
“Ripley” is now available on Netflix. On April 4, 2024, all eight episodes were published.
