Judge Abelina Cruz Toscano, in charge of the High Risk Court D, decided this Wednesday, April 3, to send the former director of Emetra, Howard Yang Luke, to trial for the crime of embezzlement.

According to the investigation, Yang allegedly provided some positions in the institution in charge of regulating traffic in Guatemala City.

The people hired supposedly did not come to work, but they did receive the amounts established in the contracts. These events would have occurred between 2013 and 2014.

The corruption case is known as “Pandora’s Box.” Howard Yang surrendered to authorities on April 7, 2022, following being on the run for five years.

The accused has alternative measures that allow him to move within the department of Guatemala; However, you cannot approach the facilities of the capital municipality and must submit to the Public Ministry for biometric control.

During the hearing, an audio was played with the statement of the witness Alejandra Reyes Ochoa, who narrated the way in which the issue of contracts was supposedly handled.

Yang Luke’s defense lawyers rejected the witness’s statement and wanted it not to be taken by the judge; However, said request was declared without merit.

Now, it will be the High Risk Court B that will decide whether Yang Luke is guilty or not of the crime he is accused of.

The hearing to offer evidence was scheduled for next April 24 prior to setting a date for the start of the debate.
