The Danish cycling star Jonas Vingegaard has received a provisional sentence following Thursday’s ugly crash in the Basque Country Tour.
The Visma rider has broken his collarbone and several ribs. His employer writes this on Twitter.
The team also reports that he is conscious and that his condition is stable. As a precaution, however, he will remain in the hospital, it says.
At the same time, the team sends a thank you for the many greetings and messages that Vingegaard has received following Thursday’s accident.
The Dane was one of 12 riders who drove off the tarmac in a corner and landed hard in the bank. Here he lay still for a quarter of an hour while he was attended to by health personnel, before he was carried into an ambulance wearing a neck collar and taken to hospital.
The broken bones come particularly inconveniently with just three months until this summer’s Tour de France.
Vingegaard has won the prestigious stage race for the past two years, but if he is able to compete at all, he will have had a less than optimal start.
According to sundhed.dk, you can resume normal daily activities and participate in non-contact sports six weeks following a collarbone fracture, while rib fractures will be in clear recovery following the same period. However, the healing time depends on how complicated the fractures are and whether they have caused other damage to the body.
Vingegaard’s strong rivals Primoz Roglic (Bora) and Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step) also retired following being involved in Thursday’s terrible crash. They have also undergone hospital examinations.
The Belgian cycling phenomenon Evenepoel has also broken his collarbone, and in addition he has broken his right shoulder blade. On Friday, he will fly to Belgium to undergo further examinations, Quick-Step states on its website.
Bora states that Roglic has escaped the crash without fracture.
As a result of the exit of the stars, Mattias Skjelmose takes over the leader’s jersey in the Tour of the Basque Country. He will try to repeat compatriot Vingegaard’s achievement from last year, when the thybo won the stage race overall.
