Ilyuchenko scores the first goal
Professional soccer K-League 1 FC Seoul scored 5 goals without English Premier League (EPL) player Jesse Lingard. At the center was the revival of Ilyuchenko (Germany).
Ilyuchenko recorded 2 goals and 2 assists in the first half alone in the Hana Bank K-League 1 2024 5th round home game once morest Gimcheon Sangmu held at Seoul World Cup Stadium on the 3rd, leading Seoul to a 5-1 victory.
Ilyuchenko, who started as a frontline striker, assisted Cho Young-wook’s first goal in the 15th minute of the first half and then scored the team’s second goal in the 33rd minute of the first half.
Then, five minutes later, he completed Ki Sung-yueng’s pass with a right-footed shot, completing his multiple goal.
Also, in the extra time of the first half, he helped Lim Sang-hyeop score and accumulated 4 attack points on the day.
Ilyuchenko played in the German second division and entered the Korean stage wearing a Pohang Steelers uniform in 2019.
Even though he only played in the second half of his first season in Pohang, he left a strong impression with 9 league goals and 2 assists. In the 2020 season, he ranked 2nd in the scoring rankings with 19 league goals and 5 assists.
Ilyuchenko, who transferred to Jeonbuk Hyundai in 2021, has been playing in Seoul since the second half of 2022.
Ilyuchenko, who consistently scored goals in Pohang and Jeonbuk, did not show as much firepower as expected in Seoul. He scored seven goals in the second half of the 2022 season, but only five goals in 24 games in the 2023 season.
This year is different. He has already scored 3 goals (2 assists) in 5 games, and is tied for 5th in the scoring rankings.
Reuniting with coach Kim Ki-dong, his mentor during his Pohang days, changed Ilyuchenko.
It is known that Coach Kim motivated Ilyuchenko by showing him old videos to revive him.
In fact, Ilyuchenko did not just stay at the front line in the Gimcheon match, but moved widely to the back and left and right, replicating the performance he showed in Pohang in the past.
Ilyuchenko’s revival is welcome in Seoul. This is especially true because Lingard, who was brought in with high expectations, came out amidst a slump.
Seoul’s ‘superstar’ Lingard participated in all 1st to 3rd rounds of K League 1, but had no offensive points.
To make matters worse, he suffered a knee injury during the international break and missed the 4th round away game once morest Gangwon FC (1-1 draw) and the 5th round once morest Gimcheon.
After the 3rd round match once morest Jeju United (2-0 win), Lingard was criticized by Coach Kim for his attitude, saying he was playing in a hurry.
Coach Kim’s remarks also became a hot topic in England, and Lingard also dismissed rumors of discord, pledging a revival.
However, Coach Kim’s concerns are growing as he has not been able to integrate into Seoul as expected, not only with the Seoul club but also with the highest price in the league.
Meanwhile, Seoul, which rose to 4th place in the league (8 points) thanks to Ilyuchenko’s performance, will play an away game once morest Daegu FC in the 6th round on the 7th.
