Pedro Sanchez declared the government’s intention to recognize the Palestinian state by the summer of 2024. His statements were made in Amman and published by various Spanish newspapers.
“We have to think seriously regarding doing it this semester,” the Spanish prime minister told reporters accompanying him on his three-nation tour of the Middle East that began in Jordan, according to La Vanguardia newspaper. His statements show an acceleration of the timetable that Pedro Sanchez had recently presented for the recognition of a Palestinian state.
On March 9, he announced that he would propose to the Spanish parliament to vote on this recognition until the end of the parliamentary term, i.e. until the summer of 2027.
Less than two weeks later, on March 22, on the sidelines of the European summit in Brussels, the Spanish prime minister and his Irish, Maltese and Slovenian counterparts issued a joint statement declaring they were “ready to recognize Palestine” and that this will be done “when it can make a positive contribution (to the settlement of the conflict Israel – Palestinians) and when the conditions will be favorable”.
The newspaper El País estimates that the recognition can be done during the pre-election campaign of the European elections, which in Spain are being held on June 9, “or in the weeks that follow.”
According to El País, Pedro Sánchez told the journalists accompanying him on the tour that they should “monitor the decisions that will be taken soon in Brussels and New York”, i.e. by the European Union and the UN, meaning that the decision of Madrid will be linked to the development of the international situation.
According to the protothema, El País also estimates that the Spanish prime minister, who following Jordan will visit Saudi Arabia and Qatar, wants “to try to convince the Arab countries that have not yet recognized Israel”, such as these gulf countries to “do it”.
The Spanish Prime Minister persistently repeats that the only solution to the conflict requires the recognition of two states, Israel and Palestine.
