Calabrò: «The history of businesses is a strong lever of international competitiveness»

«History is a fundamental part of the competitiveness of our companies. History is a factor in competition. And it is an element of Made in Italy recognized throughout the world”, speaks regarding it Antonio Calabrò, today director of the Pirelli Foundation and president of Museimpresa, who in Naples in the prestigious Circolo Nazionale dell’Unione, made his debut in the role of honorary president of the Association of companies historic Italian families, “I Centenari”, on the occasion of the conference entitled «Historic companies build the future».

«Enhancing history and belonging to the territories – underlines Calabrò – is not a quirk of the company, but means valorising a strong point to make companies, supply chains and production structures grow and gain space on the markets». The companies represented by “I Centenari” are a clear example of an Italy that looks to innovation without forgetting its roots, continues the honorary president.

Cilento president and promoter

The meeting was introduced by the president of “I Centenari”, Ugo Cilento, who leads a company that markets high quality tailored clothes and total looks, founded in 1780, now also registered with the Museimpresa association. «We are the first association – specifies Cilento – that requires members to meet the requirements of historicity and family life».

The mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi, also participated in the meeting, which focused on a long interview with Antonio Calabrò. «Naples is famous throughout the world for its music, for the beauty of the city – he said – And also for the creativity of its businesses and for its artistic craftsmanship. In short, in Naples, there is a great entrepreneurial capacity, often ignored, which we intend to propose as an intangible heritage of humanity in the context of the UNESCO dossier that we are developing.”

Sustainability, artificial intelligence, generational change

Numerous discussion points were touched upon in Calabrò’s interventions. «The Italians, since the Middle Ages – said Antonio Calabrò – produced, in the shadow of the bell towers, beautiful things that the world liked: Carlo Cipolla’s definition is still very valid today. And – added Calabrò – the peculiarity of the Italian company lies in the fact that it is capable of reconciling aesthetics and functionality. This is design, which, in fact, was born in Italy.” Calabrò calls for attention to the issues of environmental and social sustainability (“pay these young people a little more”), and on the green deal he says “A great strategy that must be economically sustainable”. Regarding artificial intelligence and whether it is a suitable tool for historic businesses, he expressed no doubts: “It is a valid accelerator for all businesses and also for crafts.”
