The second bad season is regarding to end and the parties are not hinting at any idea of a concrete truce. Indeed, Russia is preparing a new offensive in the war in Ukraine and will launch the attack between the end of spring and summer, when the weather conditions will ensure a better success of the plan. Moscow will focus in particular on one ‘operational zone’. This is the scenario outlined by the Institute for the Study of War, an American think tank that monitors the conflict that began more than 2 years ago with the invasion ordered by Vladimir Putin. The Kremlin, experts say, should concentrate its efforts in western Donetsk. “Ukraine has urgent needs: any delay in providing support will have consequences on the battlefield while we are talking.” This is what NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg expressed himself this morning, meeting journalists before the summit with representatives of the Alliance countries in Brussels, thus underlining the need to “change the dynamics of our support”.
While waiting for developments and decisions, however, the front lines are starting to collapse. As anticipated, the arrival of good weather might encourage a resumption of the Russian advance. This fear is very widespread among the high ranks of the Ukrainian forces. According to what Politico reports, Russia will soon be able to “penetrate the front line and destroy it in some parts”. Ukraine, for its part, does not have the means at its disposal to counter massive attacks. Lowering the recruitment age will help to have younger forces, of course. However, they will continue to lack sufficient weapons to counter the Kremlin’s soldiers. “Russia is devastating cities and villages across Ukraine, it is relentless in its bombing of front-line and border areas in particular,” Ukrainian President Zelensky wrote in X.
