The French government would like to stop depending on Russia in the field of nuclear energy by 2030. The possibility of building a plant for the conversion and enrichment of processed uranium in France is being “seriously” considered.

The Russian nuclear industry is one of the few that still avoids international sanctions. For the conversion of processed uranium, France has no choice but to carry out this step in Russia, the only country in the world that, through its state operator Rosatom, has a conversion plant for this purpose.

French energy producer and supplier EDF is bound by a €600 million contract awarded in 2018 to Tenex, a subsidiary of Rosatom, to reprocess and enrich uranium resulting from the reprocessing of French spent fuel. EDF says it is complying with its “contractual obligations” while “strictly applying all international sanctions” and trade restrictions once morest Russia. The option of building a plant for the enrichment and conversion of processed uranium was already mentioned by the government in November in the document “French Energy and Climate Strategy”.

Nuclear power produces 70.6% of electricity in France. The country has 56 operating industrial nuclear reactors with a total capacity of 61.4 GW.
