Egypt – Egypt’s Ambassador to Italy, Bassam Rady, announced that the Secretary General of the Mediterranean Parliament, Ambassador Sergio Piazza, handed him the Parliament’s decision letter to award President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi the Champion of Peace Award for the year 2024.
The Egyptian ambassador said that the award was given to Sisi for his huge humanitarian efforts to bring security and stability to the region, especially with regard to the Gaza crisis and the strenuous efforts to contain the situation.
Bassam Rady added that the Secretary General of Parliament assured him that history will be written with all the pride and honor of President Sisi’s keenness to make an effort for the stability and security of the region.
The Mediterranean Parliament’s decision stated the following:
“Mr. President El-Sisi, as you know, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean annually recognizes and expresses gratitude to individuals and organizations whose exceptional contributions serve in various fields to promote political, social and economic development, environmental protection, culture and interfaith dialogue in the Euro-Mediterranean region and the Gulf region, and to promote peace and prosperity.”
The statement continued: “It gives me great pleasure to inform you that His Excellency Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, received the 2024 Mediterranean Parliament General Assembly Award “Hero of Peace” in recognition of his unique efforts in reaching a ceasefire in Gaza and delivering vital aid to the population. Palestinians and the release of hostages… taking into account Egypt’s decisive role in achieving peace and stability in the region, and its continuing efforts to achieve this through humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and reaching a final ceasefire, as well as opening a real horizon for achieving permanent peace on the basis of the two-state solution, in line with With the Charter of the United Nations and relevant resolutions, in addition to its efforts to prevent the expansion of the current confrontations in a way that exposes international and regional peace and security to further risks.”
The official announcement of the winners and the presentation of the award are scheduled to take place during the opening session of the eighteenth plenary session of the Parliamentary Assembly scheduled to be held on May 15, 2024 in the city of Braga, Portugal.
The Parliament of the Mediterranean (PAM) is an international organization founded in 2005 by the national parliaments of the countries of the Euro-Mediterranean region. It is the legal successor to the Conference on Security and Cooperation in the Mediterranean (CSCM), which was launched in the early 1990s.
It also has permanent observers to the United Nations in Geneva, New York and Vienna, a liaison officer with the Office of the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon in Jerusalem, and a permanent representative to the League of Arab States in Cairo.
