Belgian Cyclist Tim Merlier Surprises with Victory at Grand Prix de l’Escaut – Race Recap and Analysis

It was indeed a Belgian who triumphed. But not necessarily the one we were thinking of. Winner of the Grand Prix de l’Escaut last year and sparkling since the start of the season, Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) was in fact beaten by his compatriot Tim Merlier (Soudal – Quick Step), this Wednesday during the 2024 edition. Dylan Groenewegen (Jayco-AlUla) completed the podium.

It must be said that Merlier, also particularly successful this year (already seven bouquets on the clock) maneuvered perfectly in the finale, which gave rise to a very nervous sprint punctuated by several falls. Perfectly led by his teammates, the 31-year-old runner was ideally placed when he made his effort, a few hectometers from the finish, and no one was able to catch him. Locked up, Philipsen therefore had to settle for a supporting role. But let him rest assured: he will undoubtedly have the opportunity to take his revenge in the coming weeks.
