Ultravox bassist Chris Cross is dead

The musician died at the age of 71, Ultravox frontman Midge Ure’s press office confirmed on Tuesday. The singer had previously said goodbye to his bandmate in a social media post. The cause of death was not initially known. According to media reports, Cross, whose real name was Chris Allen, died on March 25th.

“You are loved and missed”

“You were the glue that held the band together,” Ure wrote on his social media channels. “You were the logic in the madness and the madness in our lives. It was great knowing you and growing with you. You are loved and missed, old friend.”

Bassist Cross, along with Ure, Warren Cann and Billy Currie, was one of the founding members of the band, which, with its creative, sophisticated synth sound and hits like “Hymn”, “Vienna” and “Dancing With Tears In My Eyes”, was one of the style-defining bands of the belonged to the New Wave movement.

The band split up in 1987, but reunited a good 20 years later. In 2012, Ultravox released “Brilliant” together. In 2023, the album “Quartet”, which was recorded in 1982 under the aegis of Beatles producer George Martin, was released in a new edition.
