Cuba stands out as the third country that welcomes the most Asturians abroad. In fact, Argentina, Mexico and the Island concentrate more than half of these descendants worldwide.

Official data indicate that the number of Asturians abroad increased by 2.9% last year. Now there are 142,275 descendants of that region of Spain who live abroad.

The Asturian Society of Economic and Industrial Studies (Sadei) carried out an in-depth analysis of the topic.

The research showed that America brings together the majority of Asturians in the world, 77%, followed by Europe, with 21%.

Argentina leads the list

The list of countries that host the most Asturians abroad is led by Argentina. 34,362 reside in that South American nation, followed by Mexico, with 25,077.

In third place is Cuba with 16,822. If we add the three figures, it gives almost 54% of Spaniards residing abroad registered in Asturias.

If we analyze the data recorded last year, Cuba is second among the nations with new registrations, with 1,474. The list is headed by Mexico, with 2,043, and Argentina moves to third place, with 1,025.

The number of Asturians abroad has increased since 2009; since then it has increased by 74.8%. 60% of these people are between 16 and 64 years old, although 10% are over 85 years old. Meanwhile, the proportion between men and women is similar, with 49% and 51% respectively.

This evaluation was carried out taking into account the Register of Spaniards Resident Abroad. The registry contains the registrations of Spaniards who reside outside that country.

79% of residents outside Spain registered in Asturias were born abroad. Meanwhile, 19% did so in the Principality.
