Disinfecting every little corner of your home does not necessarily eliminate all germs, an expert has warned as a large part of the population begins their spring cleaning.

Spring often rhymes with cleaning: it is therefore at this time of year that we clean our homes, but also that some people reorganize their living environment.
“What we’re trying to do is create a cooler environment. And so cleaning, getting rid of the dust, it’s a really good thing to do,” Jason Tetro, an Edmonton-based microbiologist and specialist in emerging pathogens, told Global News.
The latter also emphasized that this process helps avoid certain health problems. “Spring cleaning is absolutely fantastic when it comes to preventing the risk of irritation, asthma and any other type of allergies,” he said.
However, there is a nuance between cleaning and disinfection, according to the specialist. When we talk regarding cleaning, it’s more regarding aesthetics, but when we think regarding disinfection, we aim to eliminate germs and microbes. Tetro then recommends focusing on places that are more likely to harbor pathogens.
Some people tend to disinfect everything from A to Z, which isn’t bad in itself, but it won’t stop germs from wandering around the house.
“There’s nothing wrong with that. Where things get a little different is when you disinfect absolutely everything. If you want to disinfect everything so that there are no more germs, you will fail, because the most germy place in a house is you, ”said Jason Tetro.
Indeed, the second a person enters a room, they bring with them a large quantity of germs.
Don’t forget to be careful with household products, as they are often chemical.
“Household chemicals […] can be dangerous. They can cause poisoning, burns, fires or explosions if not handled safely,” Health Canada mentioned on its website, subsequently giving advice regarding the purchase, use and storage of these products.
