Traditional start of the summer bar season in sunshine at the Praterstern
Vienna (OTS/RK) – Vienna’s Mayor Michael Ludwig and Walter Ruck, President of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, officially opened the Schanigarten summer season today, Tuesday, together with the specialist group chairman of the Vienna coffee houses, Wolfgang Binder. Last autumn, in sunshine, wind and slightly chilly temperatures, Ludwig emphasized the importance of gastronomy for Vienna as a business location when Café Engländer opened on the Praterstern – and that of the pub gardens for the attitude to life in the city: “Like every year, it is a pleasant event that we attend today. With their bar gardens, our coffee houses bring Viennese cosiness to the outside world and shape the cityscape in a unique way.” The Viennese guest and coffee house culture is known and appreciated throughout Austria, Europe and far beyond, the bar gardens make a decisive contribution to this special hospitality, said Ludwig.
Vienna Chamber of Commerce President Walter Ruck: “The pub gardens are an important economic factor for Vienna. Together with everyone involved, we have also implemented the possibility of opening in the winter – with strict regulations that can be viewed positively.”
Coffee house chairman Wolfgang Binder: “The Viennese coffee houses have a centuries-long success story in our city. As a ‘second living room’, the Schanigartens contribute to this history and Vienna’s cultural heritage year following year.”
Year-round operation possible
Almost half of the 3,500 coffee houses and restaurants in Vienna with bar gardens offer their guests enjoyment in the open air even during the winter months. There has been a restricted winter season since 2017, and since September 2023, all-season bar gardens can be applied for from the municipal district offices in accordance with strict requirements. Mayor Ludwig: “We have set up rules of the game that everyone must adhere to. This works very well, but there are penalties for violations.” According to Ludwig, around 120 complaints have been made since the new regulation began.
In contrast to the guest garden, a Schanigarten is located on public land. According to legend, the name goes back to the instruction of a landlord to his assistant: “Schani, take the garden out!” According to legend, this was first done in 1754 at the “lemonade tent”. Ditch must have happened. With almost a third of the workforce, Vienna is the heart of the Austrian gastronomy landscape and the workplace of 33,500 employees, 6,500 innkeepers and more than 600 apprentices.
