Antifa trial
Written by Rainer Ackermann
The Italian Ilaria Salis remains in custody in Budapest. At a court hearing on Thursday, her lawyer asked in vain for house arrest. Left-wing Italy is in turmoil.
In return for a bail of around 40,000 euros, the Antifa terrorist was supposed to be granted a release from prison in order to escape the “indignible conditions” in Hungarian prisons. Due to the enormous (media) interest from the Italian side, two rooms at the Budapest Court of Justice had to be opened for the hearing in the Budapest Antifa terror trial.
The accomplice received three years in prison
Ilaria Salis is the main defendant in the trial; The public prosecutor’s office accuses her of participation in a criminal organization and attempted life-threatening bodily harm. Co-defendant Tobias Edelhoff is the only one to confess. Although the man is considered a “hammer gang instructor” in Germany, his criminal record was empty until the momentous Antifa “trip” to Budapest in February 2023. For the manhunt in Hungary’s capital with half a dozen passers-by beaten to the point of hospital, who were selected by the left-wing terrorists based solely on their clothing, Edelhoff was initially sentenced to three years in prison. According to the public prosecutor’s office, Salis even faces eleven years in prison.
Just came for a short vacation
Salis refuses to make any statement. The Italian media therefore emphasizes the presumption of innocence, according to which the high school teacher only traveled to Budapest for a short vacation. It would be purely coincidental that she was in a taxi with her two German co-defendants. In their camp, people are more concerned with the “inhumane prison conditions” in Hungary and with the fact that Salis is led into the courtroom with handcuffs and ankle cuffs “like an animal”. Salis now asked to be transferred to house arrest on bail of around 40,000 euros. Her argument: She is not a danger to society, wants to continue teaching in Milan and does not want to evade the court sentence by fleeing or going into hiding.
The “Democrat” Renzi is threatening
The Italian left sees political motives behind the trial once morest “their” teacher. Former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi even went so farto threaten Hungary: “Either they respect the rule of law or Budapest will no longer see a single euro from the Italians’ taxes.”
Renzi once led the PD, which was democratic in its name, but in 2019 he decided to found a new party that was more in line with his temperament: Italia Viva. Meanwhile, the PD is said to be considering whether to nominate Ilaria Salis for the European elections in June.
The main hearing in the sensational trial is scheduled for May 24th.
