The Haapsalu horror and fantasy film festival announces the public vote for the worst horror film of the previous year.

For the first time, horror films screened in Estonian cinemas in 2023 will participate in the competition, from which experts have selected the six worst.

All horror fans can participate in the voting and prizes will be drawn among the voters. The worst horror film of the year is awarded the Nüri Kirves award.

According to Helmut Jänes, head of HÕFF, the purpose of the competition is to draw attention to how many horror films, the quality of which is below average, reach Estonian cinema screens.

Candidates for the title of the worst horror film of the year:

After responding to internet trolls, comic artist Adam begins to experience sleep paralysis and the empty rocking chair in the corner of his apartment begins to move. Adam tweets regarding increasingly sinister incidents and believes he is haunted by the spirit of a boy named David. His boss encourages him to continue the “Dear David” story, but Adam finds it increasingly difficult to distinguish between what’s happening online and what’s happening in real life.
