FOUR foreign aid workers and their Palestinian driver were killed in Gaza when an Israeli strike hit their car, the health ministry in the Hamas-controlled territory said Monday.
The ministry said five “martyrs” had arrived at a hospital in Deir el-Balah, central Gaza, following “Israeli attacks targeted vehicles belonging to the American organization World Central Kitchen”.
“They had British, Australian and Polish citizenship, with a fourth unknown,” Hamas said in another statement, adding the fifth person killed was a Palestinian driver and translator.
The American NGO said it was “aware of reports” that a staff member “was killed in an IDF attack while working to support our humanitarian food delivery efforts in Gaza.”
The Israeli military said in its own statement that it was “conducting a thorough review at the highest levels to understand the circumstances of this tragic incident” and added that it “has been working closely with WCK” in efforts to provide assistance to Palestinians.
At Al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir el-Balah, an AFP correspondent saw five bodies with three foreign passports lying nearby.
World Central Kitchen has been involved in aid deliveries arriving by ship from Cyprus and the construction of a temporary dock in Gaza. (AFP/Z-3)
