Nuts are able to lower the level of cholesterol in the blood

Russia – Biologist Alexander Sozykin, associate professor at the Department of Physiology, Human Ecology and Biomedical Knowledge at the State Education University, points out that nuts lower cholesterol levels.

The scientist said in an interview with the newspaper “Izvestia”: “According to the World Health Organization, deaths resulting from cardiovascular diseases during the past decade ranked first. One of the reasons is atherosclerosis (thickening and narrowing of the lumen) of the blood vessels of the brain, coronary arteries of the heart, and vessels of the kidneys.”

According to him, this is related to widespread errors in the diet, represented by eating foods rich in “bad” cholesterol, which leads to its deposition on the inner walls of the aforementioned blood vessels.

The scientist points out that the risk of cholesterol plaque formation can be reduced by controlling the type of foods containing “bad” cholesterol that we eat, as well as by eating foods that provide the body with high-density lipoproteins (good cholesterol), such as fish, olive oil, and nuts.

He says: “It has been proven that eating 100-150 grams of walnuts daily regularly for one to two years leads to a decrease in the level of “bad” cholesterol in the blood. Because nuts, like a number of other products, contain dietary fiber, some of which is insoluble and is not affected by acidic stomach juice and enzyme systems in the small intestine. As it passes through the digestive system, it “prevents” the absorption of “bad” fats. In addition, the sympathetic nervous system and special hormones transmit feelings of satiety and pleasure to the brain, which prevents overeating.”

He points out that the polyunsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids found in nuts replenish the level of “good” cholesterol, and antioxidants, vitamins and other essential nutrients are easily absorbed.

“There have been no comparative studies on nuts competing with each other,” he says. All nuts available on the market (walnuts, hazelnuts, cashews, pecans, Brazil nuts, pine nuts) help lower cholesterol through proper and rational nutrition, but they must be eaten in small quantities and regularly.”
