CHAIRMAN of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, emphasized that the winning party in the 2024 Legislative Election (Pileg) has the right to get the seat of Chairman of the House of Representatives for the next DPR period. This is in accordance with the mandate of the Law concerning the MPR, DPR, DPD and DPRD (UU MD3).
“The winner of the legislative election should then have the right to become chairman of the DPR, that’s what I can say,” said Puan following chairing the DPR Plenary Meeting at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Thursday (24/3).
Puan conveyed this when answering journalists’ questions regarding the possibility of her serving once more as Chair of the Indonesian DPR for the 2024-2029 DPR period.
As is known, PDI Perjuangan (PDIP) has emerged as the winning party in the Legislative Election for the third time. Based on the KPU’s calculation results, PDIP succeeded in becoming the first-placed party in the 2024 Legislative Election with 16.72 percent of the vote.
With these results, the PDIP faction members will also have the most seats in the DPR. This means that PDIP has the right to regain the seat of DPR Chair in accordance with the MD3 Law.
As for the MD3 Law, this rule is contained in Article 427 D paragraph (1) letter b which reads: The chairman of the DPR is a member of the DPR who comes from the political party that has the first largest number of seats in the DPR.

Regarding the issue of the revision of the MD3 Law which might change the rules regarding the seat of Chairman of the DPR, Puan emphasized that currently the factions in the DPR are still united. He even mentioned that the Deputy Chair of the DPR from the Gerindra Party, who won the 2024 presidential election according to the KPU, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, admitted that there had been no discussion regarding this matter from his coalition party.
“We are united, Mr. Dasco even said there isn’t one yet. You’ve never heard of Mr Dasco, right? “I’ve never heard of that,” said Puan, asking directly to Dasco who was beside her.
“We appreciate that MD3 must remain a law that must be implemented and respected by the process in the DPR. “The election process is already underway and must be carried out in accordance with the law,” stressed the Chairman of the PDIP DPP. (Ykb/Z-7)
