The government is called upon to redouble its efforts at all levels to put an end to the war raging in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. This question is from the Head of State Félix Tshisekedi in his communication during the 131st meeting of the Council of Ministers held Friday March 29, 2024 at the Cité de l’Union Africaine.
“The President of the Republic reiterated his call for general mobilization in the face of Rwandan aggression and the challenges of peace and security in our country, which is a guarantee of our economic development. It is therefore up to both the government which handles current affairs and the next government team to redouble their efforts at all levels so that together we succeed in defeating the enemy, and so that war is followed by lasting peace. , recommends Félix Tshisekedi in the minutes of the meeting.
Well before, he continued, he returned to President Tshisekedi’s “diplomatic marathon” where he reviewed the issues of peace and security on the continent and in the east of the DRC, before to cite in particular his participation in the extraordinary summit of the troika of the body of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) which was held on Saturday March 23 in Lusaka, Zambia.
“This meeting allowed the countries contributing SAMIRDC troops to review the situation prevailing in the theater of operations in North Kivu where the said troops are engaged in support of the armed forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo. This high-level meeting was also the place for reaffirmation by SADC while reiterating its support for the Luanda and Nairobi processes of its commitment made to our country within the framework of the mutual defense pact of the SADC which said it quoted: “that any armed attack once morest one of the member states will be considered as a threat to regional peace and security end quote”, recalls the minutes of the meeting.
On his return to Kinshasa, he continued, the President of the Republic welcomed from March 24 to 25, President Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of the Republic of South Sudan and current President of the African Community. of the East which included in its delegation the Secretary General of the Community of East African States, Doctor Peter Matuki.
Still as part of his diplomatic marathon, the President of the Republic went from March 27 to 28 to Nouakchott in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, as part of a working visit, following a brief visit to Lomé where he spoke with his counterpart President Faure Nyassimbe of the Republic of Togo.
“This working visit to Mauritania, which currently holds the presidency of the African Union for the 2024-2025 financial year, was an opportunity for him and his host to review the major issues linked to the achievement of the agenda 2063 of the African Union, as well as the peace and security issues prevailing on the continent, notably the resurgence of violence in the Central African region, as evidenced by the war of aggression which our country is waging “object,” he noted in his communication.
The Democratic Republic of Congo, in its eastern part, faces activism from foreign and local armed groups. In the East, the situation has deteriorated further since the resurgence of the M23 rebels supported by Kigali. Since 2021, several parts of the North Kivu province have been under the control of these rebels. They want a direct dialogue with Kinshasa, a plan that the Tshisekedi administration rejects, wanting to dialogue directly with Kagame whom it considers to be the godfather of the M23.
